Welcome to Dream, Draw Create!
This blog features art projects for children. These projects have been used in my classes. My lessons allow children to learn about all the elements and principles of art while striving to introduce them to many genres of art.

Our Giraffes Are Great Dancers Gr. 4

I have to admit every year I look forward to reading Giraffes Can't Dance by Giles Andreae illustrated by Guy Parker Rees.  The story teaches so many nice life lessons, the illustrations are beautiful and the characters are all so lovable.  Once the story has been read the children are motivated to begin their drawing of Gerald the clumsy giraffe. My students did an awesome job not only drawing the giraffe but cutting it out as well.  This lesson involved painting as well so I should back track a little bit.  To begin I give the students a sheet of 12" x 18" white drawing paper and yellow, orange and brown watercolor paint.  The drawing paper was given a water wash so we could paint wet on wet. Students are encouraged to mix small amounts of orange into the yellow to create the perfect color for their giraffe.  While the paper was still wet brown paint is randomly added for the spots.  When the students returned the following week they began their pencil drawing on the back of the painting, this avoided any messy pencil lines from showing up once the giraffe was cut out.  This was no easy shape to cut out and I was very proud of how well they did!  We set the cut out giraffe aside and began creating a background for him. The blue background paper was also 12" x 18" although I had some students who drew their giraffe so small that I needed to give them a smaller sheet of  paper.  We drew the lush flowers and foliage with chalk then colored them in with chalk pastels. Now it was time to glue Gerald down onto his very own dance floor.  At the end of the lesson we all agreed that indeed "Giraffes Can Dance!".
